单词 | carranza de miranda, bartolomé de |
释义 | Carranza de Miranda, Bartolomé deCarranza de Miranda, Bartolomé de(bärtōlōmā` dā kärän`thä dā mērän`dä), 1503–76, Spanish churchman. He joined the Dominicans (1520) and taught at Valladolid. He was active in the first part of the Council of Trent, where he distinguished himself for his vigorous support of the rule that bishops must reside in their sees. In 1554, Philip II of Spain sent him to England to aid in the restoration of Roman Catholicism. In 1558 he was made archbishop of Toledo (primate of Spain); the same year he attended Holy Roman Emperor Charles V in his last days. His commentary on the catechism appeared in 1558, and it was apparently from passages in this that he was accused of heresy. He was arrested in 1558 (with King Philip's permission); his case dragged on in Spain until 1564, when the archbishop appealed to Rome. At length, in 1576, he was found not guilty of heresy but was compelled to renounce certain propositions. |
