The regular flowers are for the most part unisexual and three– to seven-parted. The fruit most often is a berry. There are about 450 species, making up five to seven genera. The plants occur mainly in the tropics and subtropics. In the USSR species of the largest genus—Diospyros (persimmon)—grow in the Caucasus.
