释义 | Fewkes, J. WalterFewkes, J. (Jesse) Walter(1850–1930) ethnologist, archaeologist; born in Newton, Mass. Fewkes turned from zoology to ethnology in the 1880s and joined the staff of the Bureau of American Ethnology (1895–1928, chief 1918–28). He founded and edited the Journal of American Ethnology and Archaeology (1890–95). An early scholar of the Hopi and Pueblo Indians, he pioneered the integration of current anthropological studies with archaeological evidence and the opening of ancient sites to the public. |
