Churg-Strauss syndrome

Churg-Strauss syndrome

[cherg strous] a form of systemic necrotizing vasculitis in which there is prominent lung involvement with severe asthma, eosinophilia, and granulomatous reactions. If present, skin lesions consist of tender subcutaneous nodules and bruiselike spots. Called also allergic granulomatosis, allergic granulomatous angiitis, and Churg-Strauss vasculitis.

Churg-Strauss syndrome

An autoimmune vasculitis of small to medium blood vessels with hypereosinophilia arising in a background of asthma and allergic rhinitis, which may be accompanied by tissue eosinophilia, peripheral neuropathy, gastrointestinal necrosis, cardiac lesions, and renal disease. Skin lesions are common in the form of purpura, erythema, urticaria and nodules arising on the scalp and/or extremities.

Churg-Strauss syndrome

Allergic granulomatosus & angiitis Internal medicine A small vessel vasculitis characterized by eosinophil-rich and granulomatous inflammation of the respiratory tract, formation of ANCA and necrotizing vasculitis of small-to-medium-sized vessels associated with asthma, edema. See Small vessel vasculitis, Systemic vasculitis.

Churg-Strauss syndrome

A rare form of blood vessel inflammation (vasculitis) that is almost invariably accompanied by severe ASTHMA. The cause is unknown and although the condition responds well to treatment with steroids or immunosuppressive drugs, the asthma usually persists. The syndrome is distinct from other vasculitides. There are suspicions that it may possibly be caused by certain drugs used to treat asthma, especially antileukotriene drugs.
