Chuvans

Chuvans

one of the Yukaghir groups. In the 17th century, the Chuvans were nomads who wandered in the region of the upper Anadyr’ River and along the Malyi Aniui River; they engaged in hunting, fishing, and reindeer herding. In the 18th century, under pressure from the Chukchi, some of the Chuvans moved to the Kolyma River and became russianized; the remaining Chuvans were assimilated by the nomadic Koriaks (Chavchyv) and the Chukchi.
