[′krak ə′res·tər] (naval architecture) On a ship, a plate riveted over another plate where the latter has a crack or a stressed area where a crack might begin. A hole or slot formed at the end of a crack to keep it from spreading, or in a stressed area to prevent a crack from beginning.
