Erich Berneker

Berneker, Erich

 

Born Feb. 3, 1874, in Königsberg; died Mar. 15, 1937, in Munich. German philologist in the field of Slavic languages.

Berneker, a professor at the University of Munich, belonged to the neogrammarian school. He was one of the first to study the oldest Slavic syntax (in particular, word order). His basic work, Etymological Dictionary of the Slavic Language (issues 1–6, 1908–10), remained unfinished. (It had reached the word mor.) He also edited the journal of the neogrammarians, Archiv für slavische Philologie.
