[′fȯr‚pōl·iŋ] (mining engineering) A timbering method for a very weak roof in which a bench of timbers is set and boards or long wedges are placed above the header; as the next bench of timbers is placed at the inbye end of the wedges, other like wedges are driven in under the first wedges and over the second header. Also known as spiling.
