Location:13 separate parcels in west and central New Mexico. Accessible by US 85, 66, and 60. Nearby cities/towns include Albuquerque, Datil, Gallup, Grants, Magdalena, Mountainair, and Socorro.
Facilities:Visitor center, 22 campgrounds, dispersed camping, picnic sites, ski area, trails, boat launches.
Activities:Camping, deer and antelope hunting, OHV riding, limited fishing, hiking, mountain biking, hang gliding, downhill skiing (at Sandia Peak).
Special Features:Forest includes the Datil, Gallinas, Magdalena, Bear, Manzano, Sandia, San Mateo, Mount Taylor, and Zuni mountains. Minutes east of downtown Albuquerque, an aerial tram travels from the desert floor to the top of the forest's 10,378-foot Sandia Peak. The 2.7-mile Sandia Peak Tram, said to be the world's longest aerial tram, offers riders an 11,000-square-mile panoramic view of New Mexico.
