Established: 1964.
Location:Along the Colorado River, 20 miles south of Blythe, California.
Facilities:Visitor center, viewing sites, auto tour route, nature trail.
Activities:Boating, water skiing, canoeing, fishing, hunting.
Special Features:The refuge encompasses the historic Colorado River channel, which provides life-sustaining water to wildlife that survives in an environment that reaches 120 degrees in the summer and receives an average of only 2 inches of rain a year.
Habitats: 16,600 acres of lower Colorado River floodplain, surrounded by desert ridges and washes.
Access: Open during daylight hours.
Wild life: More than 288 species of birds, including bald eagle, southwestern willow flycatcher, Yuma clapper rail, Gambel's quail, mourning and white-winged doves, greater sandhill cranes, Canada geese, desert mule deer, bobcat, and coyotes.
