Bowditch, Charles P. (Pickering)

(1842–1921) businessman, archaeologist; born in Boston, Mass. A Harvard graduate, he was president of Pepperell Manufacturing Company and Massachusetts Hospital Life Insurance Company while pursuing a career as an amateur archaeologist. After 1891 he planned and financed annual Peabody Museum expeditions to Central America. He wrote a groundbreaking study of Maya hieroglyphics (1910).
