Cartas de Población

Cartas de Población

(also cartas-pueblas), in the medieval states of the Iberian Peninsula, agreements between feudal landowners and inhabitants of settlements that had been reestablished during the Reconquest. Cartas de población were very similar in content to fueros; the difference was mainly in the character of legal formulation, the cartas de población being made by two parties rather than one. Cartas de población were first drawn up in the ninth century; they were especially common in the tenth to 12th centuries.
