Carter, Gwendolyn Margaret

(1906–91) political scientist; born in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. A Harvard Ph.D., she was naturalized in the early 1940s and taught at Smith College (1943–64), Northwestern University (1964–74), and Indiana University (1974–84). After 1948 she focused on Africa, particularly on apartheid; her books include The Politics of Inequality (1958, later revised) and Which Way is South Africa Going? (1980).
