In the southwestern corner of ND; organized Mar 8, 1883 (prior to statehood) from Billings County. Eliminated in 1903 for lack of settlement; reestablished Jun 10, 1907. Name Origin: Possibly for Edward M. Bowman, a Dakota Territory representative. Another source says that William Bowman was the territorial legislator, and Edward M. Bowman was an official of the Milwaukee Road Railroad that ran through the county
