cartridge starting

cartridge starting

A type of starter consisting of a magazine with a number of cartridges connected to the starter breech. Cartridges may be fired electrically or mechanically. The gas pressure from the cartridge is converted into a rotary impulse by the starter unit, which is sufficient to rotate the engine two or three times at a high enough speed to start it. The system is also called a cartridge starter, cartridge-pneumatic starter, and combustion starter.
