ebullism
ebullism[′eb·yə‚liz·əm] (physiology) The formation of bubbles, especially of water vapor bubbles in biological fluids, owing to reduced ambient pressure. ebullismThe boiling of body fluids. The formation of bubbles, with particular reference to water vapor bubbles in biological fluids caused by reduced ambient pressure. When the atmospheric pressure reaches 47 mm of mercury at an altitude of 19.2 km (63,000 ft), the water vapor pressure of body fluids is the same as that of the atmosphere. The manifestations of ebullism include bubble formation in the blood, mucous membranes in the mouth and joints and conjunctiva of the eye, and swelling of the skin as a result of diffuse bubble formation in the tissues. This functional limit can be circumvented only with a full- or partial-pressure suit or a pressurized cabin.ebullism
eb·ul·lism (eb'yū-lizm), Formation of water vapor bubbles in the tissues brought on by an extreme reduction in barometric pressure; occurs if the body is exposed to pressures above an altitude of about 19,000 m (about 63,000 ft), or if a diver rises rapidly from a great depth to the surface. [L. ebullire, to boil out] Air embolism at high altitude—> 20,000 meters—in which the total ambient pressure is 47 mm Hgebullism (eb'yu-lizm) [L. ebullire, to boil over + -ism] Formation of water vapor in body tissue, which occurs when the body is exposed to extreme reduction in barometric pressure. See: bends; decompression illnessebullism The formation of water vapour bubbles in the blood as a result of an acute drop in atmospheric pressure or in the pressure to which a diver is exposed, as from too sudden a rise to the surface. |
