Boyer, Ernest

Boyer, Ernest (Leroy)

(1928– ) foundation executive; born in Dayton, Ohio. He was an innovating chancellor of the State University of New York (1970–76) and U.S. Commissioner of Education (1977–79). As president of the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching (1979) he issued major reports calling for higher teaching and curriculum standards in American high schools (1983) and colleges (1986).
