The gates have served for centuries as a natural highway linking Anatolia with the Mediterranean coast.Cilician Gates(Turkish, Külek Bogazi), a mountain pass through the Taurus Mountains between the Bolkar and Ala Dag ranges in southern Turkey. It connects the Anatolian Plateau with the coastal Çukurova lowland. The pass is formed by a narrow through canyon of the Çakit River, along which there is a railroad. The highway from Asia Minor to Syria and Mesopotamia passes further west along the gorges of the Tarsus and Çakit rivers and through the pass of the Cilician Gates. |
