Casement, Roger David

Born Sept. 1, 1864, in Kingstown, County Dublin; died Aug. 3, 1916, in London. Participant in the Irish national liberation movement.

While a British consul, Casement became famous in the late 19th century and early 20th for his exposure of colonialist atrocities in the Belgian Congo, Peru, and Brazil. In November 1914 he arrived in Germany in an unsuccessful attempt to win military support for the Irish movement from German ruling circles. Striving to ward off the Irish uprising of 1916, which he believed could not succeed without foreign assistance, Casement was landed in Ireland by a German submarine, but he was arrested on Apr. 24,1916, and in August was hanged by order of a British court. In 1965 his remains were transferred to his homeland.
