(käzĕr`tä), city (1991 pop. 69,027), capital of Caserta prov., Campania, S central Italy. It is an agricultural, commercial, and growing industrial center, and a transportation junction. The surrender of the German forces in Italy to the Allies took place there on Apr. 29, 1945. Caserta is noted for its magnificent royal palace (built 1752–74) and gardens. There is an academy of aeronautics in the city.

There are flour mills and plants for the production of tobacco. Wine and olive oil are also produced. There are electronics, chemical, and glass industries. Caserta is the site of a Romanesque cathedral (1113–53; Gothic bell tower, 1234) and the Palazzo Reale (from 1752, architect L. Vanvitelli).
