Foote, Arthur William,
1853–1937, American organist, teacher, and composer, b. Salem, Mass.; pupil of J. K. PainePaine, John Knowles,1839–1906, American composer, organist, and educator, b. Portland, Maine, studied in Berlin. In 1862 he began to teach music at Harvard and held (from 1875) the first chair of music in an American university.

Among his compositions, romantic and lyrical, are orchestral works, songs, and choral and chamber music. His Suite for Strings in E Major is his best-remembered work.
