A still camera technique for ensuring correct exposure. To bracket manually, one picture is taken at the estimated exposure setting; another slightly underexposed and a third slightly overexposed. One of the three images typically looks better than the rest. Cameras may also feature automatic bracketing, which takes several different exposures one after the other. See HDR for photos. A procedure used in subjective refraction in which large and equal steps of dioptric changes are made above and below the presumed correct answer, and then reducing the size of the dioptric changes and shifting the centre of the range, until the finest and just detectable blur is induced by equal steps above and below the refractive error. It is commonly used with patients with low vision and also to check the range of clear vision provided by a near addition.

Bracketing

The process of arranging groups of underwriters responsible for placing a new issue with investors into a hierarchy. This hierarchy indicates how much of an issue each group of underwriters is placing with respect to the others. The brackets are called, from largest to smallest: bulge bracket, major bracket, minor bracket, underwriter, selling group. The second largest bracket is sometimes called the mezzanine bracket. Brackets are listed in order of size on an advertisement detailing each new issue, known as the tombstone.
