comprador capitalist

comprador capitalist

an entrepreneur in colonial or THIRD WORLD countries who accumulates capital through acting as intermediary between indigenous producers and foreign merchants. ‘Comprador’ is a Spanish word meaning ‘buyer’. In FRANK's analysis, such capitalists would only promote Third World dependency, since their economic interests were in the very economic transactions which he saw as existing at the heart of the dependency relationship.
