Crayon Manner

Crayon Manner

a variant of the stipple method of intaglio engraving on metal, which imitates pencil, charcoal, red chalk, or pastel lines. The effects of the crayon manner are achieved by applying small strokes or dots on a grounded plate with a roulette or a mattoir. The plate is then immersed in acid. The crayon manner was a popular reproduction technique in the 18th century (G. Demarteau and L. M. Bonnet in France). The technique has been rarely used in the 20th century.
