Agadzhan Babaev

Babaev, Agadzhan Gel’dyevich

 

Born May 10, 1929, in Mary. Soviet physical geographer. Corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1976); academician and president of the Academy of Sciences of the Turkmen SSR (1975). Member of the CPSU since 1954.

Babaev graduated from the geography department of the Ashkhabad Pedagogical Institute in 1949. From 1950 to 1960 he was associated with the A. M. Gorky Turkmen University. He served as director of the Desert Institute of the Academy of Sciences of the Turkmen SSR from 1960 to 1975. In 1959, he was named chairman of the Geographical Society of the Turkmen SSR. His principal works deal with the study of nature and with the development of the desert.

A deputy to the Supreme Soviet of the USSR since 1979, Babaev has been awarded the Order of the Badge of Honor and various medals.
