Dezful

(dĕzfo͞ol`), city (1991 pop. 181,309), Khuzestan prov., SW Iran, on the Dez River, near the site of ancient SusaSusa
, ancient city, capital of Elam. The site is 15 mi (23 km) SW of modern Dizful, Iran. It is the biblical Shushan, and its inhabitants were called Susanchites. From the 4th millennium B.C., Elam was under the cultural influence of Mesopotamia.

The city gets its name, which means "citadel bridge," from a bridge built across the Dez by (according to legend) Shapur II. Dezful was a scene of rioting on the eve of the Iranian Revolution in 1978; it was attacked by Iraqi planes in the Iran-Iraq WarIran-Iraq War,

a city in southwestern Iran, on the Dez River (Shatt al Arab river basin) in Khuzistan Province. Population, 105,400 (1966). The city has rice-milling and cotton-ginning plants, as well as canneries. There is a handicraft industry producing carpets, leather, and other goods. Dezful is a center of the leather and wool trade.
