David Lvovich Talmud

Born Oct. 11 (24), 1900, in Elizavetgrad, now Kirovograd; died Feb. 8, 1973, in Moscow. Soviet physical chemist. Corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1934). Member of the CPSU from 1940.

After graduating from the Odessa Chemical Institute in 1923, Talmud taught at the University of Odessa. He began working at the Leningrad Institute of Chemical Physics in 1930 and at the Institute of Biochemistry of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR in 1934. His research dealt mainly with the physical chemistry of surface layers and with colloid chemistry.

In addition to his theoretical studies, Talmud investigated a number of problems of importance to industry. He received the State Prize of the USSR in 1943 and was awarded the Order of Lenin, two other orders, and various medals.
