Joseph Hamilton Daviess (1774-1811), VA soldier and jurist who unsuccessfully attempted to indict Aaron Burr for treason (1806). According to Jacob Piatt Dunn, "The Colonel's name was Daveiss and he always wrote it that way", however, the name is sometimes spelled 'Daviess' in biographical entries and in places named for him
