Reimers, Fedor Eduardovich

 

Born July 12 (25), 1904, in Ekaterinoslav, present-day Dnepropetrovsk. Soviet plant physiologist; corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1970). Member of the CPSU since 1962.

In 1930, Reimers graduated from Odessa Agricultural Institute. He became a professor in 1959. Between 1950 and 1961 he was a department chairman at the Eastern Siberian branch of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (since 1957, the Siberian division of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR). From 1961 to 1967, Reimers was director of the Biological Institute in Irkutsk; in 1967 he became the director of the Siberian Institute of Plant Physiology and Biochemistry.

Reimers’ principal works are on the growth and development (mainly the embryogeny) of plants in connection with problems of seed raising in Siberia. He has conducted research on the physiological reasons for low seed germination in Siberia and has worked out methods for increasing seed germination.

Reimers has been awarded two orders and various medals.
