Djordje Brancovic

Brancović, Djordje

Born 1645 in Enopol’, Arad Zupanate; died Dec. 19, 1711. Political figure and Serbian historian.

During the Austro-Turkish War of 1683–99, Brancovic proposed a plan for the creation of an Illyrian Kingdom, a Slavic state on the Balkan Peninsula from the Black Sea to the Adriatic. In 1689 he published a call for an uprising of the Slavs against the Turks, independent of the actions of Austria. For this he was arrested by the Austrian authorities. In prison he wrote a Slavo-Serbian chronicle that summarized the history of Serbia and the adjoining countries from earliest times.
