Echinopanax Elatum

(Russian common name, zamanikha), a shrub of the family Araliaceae. It attains a height of 1 m, and its stem, branches, and the undersides of its leaves along the veins and border, as well as the long petioles, are thickly covered with brittle, needle-like thorns. The leaves are simple, up to 40 cm in diameter, and have five to seven or nine lobes, and they are located at the apex of the stem. The flowers are small, bisexual, and greenish yellow, growing in small umbels gathered in an elongated raceme or panicle. The fruit is juicy and bright red. The shrub grows wild in the spruce and fir forests of the Korean Peninsula and in the Far East of the USSR. Some species of the genus Nitraria are also called zamanikha.
