Aurelius Victor, Sextus

(also Sextus Aurelius Victor). Roman historian of the fourth century.

A native of Africa and of unknown descent, Aurelius ruled the province of Lower Pannonia in 361, during the reign of Julian, and in 392–393 was a prefect of Rome. The author’s Book of the Caesars was written around 360; it contains brief biographies of the Roman emperors from Augustus to Con-stantine II (up to 360). This work has come down to us together with two later treatises, The Origin of the Roman Race and Concerning Famous Men, erroneously ascribed to Aurelius Victor and added to his works about 400 A.D.
