Braunschweiga city in the Federal Republic of Germany in the Land of Lower Saxony and a port on the Oker River, which is linked with the Mittelland Canal. Population, 226, 300 (1969). It is an important industrial center. Its industries include the manufacture of railroad equipment, various equipment for the food industry, an automobile industry (trucks, buses, and automobiles produced by a branch of the Volkswagen Company), mechanical-optical and electrotechnical works, the production of computers and office machinery and equipment, textile and food production (sugar refining, canning, flour milling) and a musical instrument factory. Braunschweig has a technical college, founded in 1745, and other higher educational and scientific research institutions. Braunschweig was founded in the 11th century and has a cathedral (1173-95), medieval churches, and half-timbered houses. In front of the Dankwarderode Castle, built in the 12th century, there stands the bronze statue of a lion, erected in 1166. The Duke Anton Ulrich Museum contains collections of German, Flemish, Dutch, and Italian art. BraunschweigenUK
