Aveide, Mariia

Born Feb. 13 (25), 1884, in Viatka; died Apr. 8, 1919, in Ekaterinburg. Active participant in the struggle to establish Soviet power in the Volga Region and the Urals. Member of the Communist Party from 1904.

Born into the family of an exiled Polish attorney-at-law, Aveide graduated from a secondary school in 1900 and worked as a tutor. In 1904 she became a member of the Perm committee of the RSDLP, participating in the revolutionary events in Perm, Motovilikha, and Ekaterinburg in 1905. A member of the Ekaterinburg Party Committee, she participated in the establishment of the soviet of workers’ deputies in Ekaterinburg. In February 1906, Aveide was secretary of the Urals Conference of the RSDLP. She was often subjected to repression. Starting in 1908, she was engaged in Party work in Samara; in 1917 she was leader of a group of agitators of the Samara province committee of the RSDLP (Bolshevik). After the temporary fall of Soviet power in Samara in June 1918, Aveide became a member of the underground committee of the RCP (Bolshevik). She was arrested in September 1918 by White Guards and sent to the Far East; however, she escaped near Irkutsk. Reaching Ekaterinburg, she became secretary of the committee of the RCP (Bolshevik). Arrested by the White Czechs on Mar. 31, 1919, she was shot on April 8.
