Avenarius, Mikhail Petrovich

 

Born Sept. 7 (19), 1835; died Sept. 4 (16), 1895. Russian physicist. Became corresponding member of the Petersburg Academy of Sciences in 1876. He was graduated from the University of Petersburg in 1858 and became a professor at the University of Kiev in 1866.

Avenarius studied thermoelectric phenomena and developed a formula for thermoelectromotive force. He determined the critical temperatures for a number of liquids.
