Electrostatic Rocket Engine

a rocket engine in which the working fluid—usually alkali metals such as cesium or rubidium or elements such as mercury or argon—is ionized, and the ions are accelerated in a strong electrostatic field to velocities of tens or hundreds of km/sec. (See also.)
