in English history, Danish fortified towns in the English Midlands, settled in the 9th cent. They were DerbyDerby, city and unitary authority (1991 pop. 218,026), central England, on the Derwent River. It was formerly county seat of Derbyshire but became administratively independent of the county in 1997.
