In the context of general equities, percentage of stocks participating in a particular market move. Technical analysts say there was significant breadth if two-thirds of the stocks listed on an exchange move in the same direction during a trading session. See: A/D line.

Breadth of the Market

The relative strength of a price movement either upward or downward. One may think of breadth of the market as the likelihood of the persistence of an upswing or a downturn in a security's price. Technical analysts use various measure of market breadth to make their recommendations or investments.
