Creighton, Mandell

(măn`dəl krī`tən), 1843–1901, British historian and churchman. He was professor of ecclesiastical history at Cambridge from 1884 until his appointment (1891) as bishop of Peterborough. In 1896 he was made bishop of London. He was a founder of the English Historical Review and wrote biographies of Cardinal Wolsey, Queen Elizabeth I, and Simon de Montfort. His masterwork was his History of the Papacy during the Period of the Reformation (5 vol., 1882–94; new ed., with title History of the Papacy from the Great Schism to the Sack of Rome, 6 vol., 1897; repr. 1968).
