A gene on chromosome 1p34.1 that encodes a member of the CITED (CREB-binding protein/p300-interacting transactivator with Asp/Glu-rich C-terminal domain) family of proteins which acts as transcriptional coactivator for TFAP2/AP-2. CITED4 enhances oestrogen-dependent transactivation mediated by oestrogen receptors. It may inhibit transactivation by HIF1A by disrupting HIF1A interaction with CREBBP, and it may play a role in regulating gene expression during development and differentiation of haematopoietic, endothelial and breast epithelial cells. It is highly expressed in the heart, liver, skeletal muscle and pancreas; it is downregulated in breast tumours. Downregulation of expression is associated with increased HIF1A, tumour growth and angiogenesis.
