Fedor Orlov

Orlov, Fedor Evplovich

Born 1843, in the village of Velikoe, Novgorod Province; died Jan. 20 (Feb. 1), 1892, in Moscow. Russian scientist in the area of mechanics.

Orlov graduated from the department of physics and mathematics of Moscow University in 1863. He defended his master’s thesis in 1869 and studied in Zürich, Berlin, Liège, and Paris from 1869 to 1872. He taught mathematics, descriptive geometry, theory of mechanisms, and hydraulics at Moscow University and the Moscow Technical School, emphasizing the applied aspects of the subjects. Orlov deserves great credit for raising the scientific level of teaching of practical mechanics. He was also the author of several works on mathematics.
