Fedorov, Andrei Aleksandrovich

 

Born Oct. 17 (30), 1908, in Tver’, now the city of Kalinin. Soviet botanist. Corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1970). Member of the CPSU since 1952. Brother of Aleksandr Aleksandrovich Fedorov.

Fedorov graduated from Tver’ Pedagogical Institute in 1929. He worked at the Sukhumi division of the Ail-Union Institute of Plant Growing from 1929 to 1935, at the Armenian branch of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR from 1935 to 1943, and at the Academy of Sciences of the Armenian SSR from 1943 to 1945. Since 1945 he has worked at the V. L. Komarov Botanical Institute of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR in Leningrad; he has been director of the institute’s laboratory since 1963.

Fedorov’s principal works are on the systematics of flowering plants, the flora of the USSR and other countries, and the history of flora. He is editor and coauthor of Flora of the European USSR (vols. 1—, 1974—) and coauthor and USSR consultant of Flora of Europe (vols. 1–4, 1964–76).

Fedorov has been awarded two orders of the Red Banner of Labor and various medals.
