Fedorov, Sergei Filippovich

Born July 1 (13), 1896, in the village of Ul’evo, Moscow Province; died Jan. 6, 1970, in Moscow. Soviet petroleum geologist. Corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1939). Member of the CPSU from 1919.

After graduating from the Moscow Academy of Mines in 1924, Fedorov taught there. From 1934 to 1956 he was a professor in and head of the subdepartment of petroleum geology at the I. M. Gubkin Moscow Petroleum Institute. During this period, he also worked at various other petroleum research institutes.

Fedorov’s principal works dealt with the geology of the petroleum and gas in the Northern Caucasus and Azerbaijan. He developed techniques for investigating mud volcanism and compiling prognostic maps for petroleum and gas deposits. Several petroleum deposits in the Volga-Ural Oil-Gas Region were discovered with Fedorov’s help.

Fedorov received the State Prize of the USSR in 1950 and 1952. He was also awarded the Order of Lenin, four other orders, and various medals.
