Insoluble in water, it is soluble in alcohol and ether. It has a boiling point of 116°C at ~2.0 kilonewtons/m² and a density of 0.855 g/cm³ at 20°C. Citro nellol is a component of many essential oils, such as rose oil and geranium oil. It is obtained, however, from raw materials that are less expensive and more readily available, such as citronellal, from which it is obtained by catalytic reduction. Citronellol and its esters are commonly used in perfumes.
