Size: 14,107 acres.
Established: Authorized on November 18, 1988. Managed cooperatively by the National Park Service and the Idaho Department of Parks and Recreation.
Location:45 miles south of Burley, Idaho. From Boise and the west, take I-84 to the Declo Exit 216 and south to ID 77 to Albion, Elba, and Almo. From Pocatello and Idaho Falls, take I-86 & I-84 to the Declo Exit and then south to Almo.
Facilities:Primitive campsites, rest rooms. Headquarters is located outside the reserve in Almo.
Activities:Camping, hiking, rock climbing, mountain biking, horseback riding, cross-country skiing, snowmobiling, interpretive and educational programs.
Special Features:This unique geologic area became a landmark in 1843 forCalifornia-bound emigrants. They left wagon ruts across the landscapeand their signatures in axle grease on Register Rock, Camp Rock andmany others. Among the scenic granite spires and sculptured rock formations that dominate this landscape, a few pinnacles and monoliths are in excess of sixty storiestall and 2.5 billion years old. The smooth granite faces offerexceptional rock climbing and more than 500 climbing routes have beenidentified. Remnants of the California National Historic Trail are still visible in the area (see separate entry in national trails section).
