Breitovo Breed

a breed of hogs of general productivity developed in Breitovo Raion, Iaroslavl’ Oblast, by crossing local, late-maturing hogs with the large white, medium white, Lithuanian white, and Danish breeds. Breitovo hogs are of the compact meat-and-lard type and of strong constitution, with well-developed hams. They are white. They are well adapted to local conditions and quickly fatten on rations with a large content of potatoes and other succulent fodders. The liveweight of boars is 300-350 kg and of sows 220-260 kg. Sows bear 11 or 12 young per litter and have a milk secretion of 65-70 kg. The fattened shoat at the age of 6.5-7 months weighs 90-100 kg and gives good bacon.

The Breitovo breed is raised in more than 30 oblasts of the RSFSR. The best pedigreed stock farms are those of the Breitovo State Breeding Station and two pedigreed stock sovkhozes, Volosovskii in Leningrad Oblast and Gorodishche in Pskov Oblast. On Jan. 1, 1969, there were 47, 600 Breitovo hogs in the USSR.
