Pavel, Elena

 

(née Sîrbu). Born June 1, 1915, in the village of Samoilovka, now in the Moldavian SSR; died Aug. 1, 1943, in Ploieşti. Figure in the youth movement in Moldavia and Rumania.

In 1934, Pavel joined the Communist Youth League of Rumania. In 1938 she was sentenced to two years’ imprisonment for helping organize student antifascist demonstrations at the University of Iaşi. Pavel became a member of the Communist Party of Rumania in 1939. Just before and during World War II she worked in the democratic organization Red Aid. In September 1942 she was sentenced to death, but the sentence was later commuted to 25 years’ imprisonment. Pavel died in prison during an American bombing raid on the Ploieşti oil fields.
