ExtantStill in existence; not destroyed, lost, or extinct.Extant (pop culture)DC Comics' time-tyrant Extant began his career as a superhero. In Showcase #75 (1968), plotter/ artist Steve Ditko (with scripter Steve Skeates), motivated by America's political divide over the Vietnam War, introduces Hank and Don Hall, quarrelsome teenage brothers with opposing ideologies. A disembodied voice—later revealed to be the Lords of Chaos and Order—grants the siblings superhuman strength and stamina, with the aggressive Hank and pacifist Don becoming the superheroes Hawk and Dove. They flew in and out of comics for nearly twenty years until Dove was killed in DC's house-cleaning opus Crisis on Infinite Earths (1985–1986). Hawk's rage intensified, despite the occasional calming influence of a new, female Dove. DC announced in 1991 that its crossover Armageddon 2001 would transform one of its heroes into a villain. Captain Atom was tapped, but a leak to the comics press spoiled the surprise, forcing the supplanting of Hawk as the bad-guy-to-be. In this series, Hawk went insane after a future version of himself killed the new Dove. Donning technologically advanced armor with time-distortion capabilities, Hawk became the despot Monarch and nearly established himself as Earth's sovereign. Three years later he was at it again, with modified raiment and a new name, Extant, in the miniseries Zero Hour: A Crisis in Time (1994), in which his chronal manipulations resulted in the deaths of three members of the Justice Society of America. Extant apparently met his demise in a 2000 tussle with the JSA, but with his ability to alter the time stream, his clock may still be ticking.extant
