Nalbandian, Dmitrii Arkad’evich
Born Sept. 2 (15), 1906, in Tbilisi. Soviet painter. People’s Artist of the USSR (1969). Member of the Academy of Arts of the USSR (1953). Member of the CPSU since 1948.
Nalbandian studied under E. E. Lansere and E. Tatevosian at the Tbilisi Academy of Arts from 1924 to 1929. He has done paintings on historical revolutionary themes, as well as portraits and landscapes. His works include S. M. Kirov Speaking to the Seventeenth Party Congress (1935, Museums of the Moscow Kremlin), portraits of A. Isaakian (1940, Picture Gallery of Armenia, Yerevan) and J. V. Stalin (1945, Tret’iakov Gallery; State Prize of the USSR, 1946), Power to the Soviets—Peace to the Peoples (with others; 1950, Ul’ianov Oblast Art Museum; State Prize of the USSR, 1951), and On the Eve of the October Revolution (1970–73, Great Kremlin Palace, Moscow). Nalbandian has been awarded the Order of the Red Banner of Labor and a number of medals. Hero of Socialist Labor (1976).
