Golubiatnikov, Dmitrii Vasil’evich

Born Oct. 26 (Nov. 7), 1866, in the village of Uriupino, present-day Uriupinsk, Volgograd Oblast, RSFSR; died Jan. 2, 1933, in Moscow. Soviet geologist and petroleum specialist. Member of the CPSU from 1924.

After graduating from the St. Petersburg Mining Institute, Golubiatnikov worked with the Geological Committee from 1900; from 1924 he was a professor at the Moscow Mining Academy. Golubiatnikov investigated the Apsheron Peninsula and its oil deposits. In 1908 he established the presence of huge reserves of petroleum in the Surakhany deposit. He also discovered a petroleum deposit east of Surakhany and indicated the presence of oil in the Mardakian region. Golubiatnikov correctly evaluated the Puta. Kara-Chukhur. and Sviatoi (Artem) Island deposits, which became the basis of major oil fields. He pointed out the necessity of studying the hydrogeology of petroleum deposits and of using elec-trometric methods in investigating testholes (logging). Golubiatnikov was the first to develop a method for compiling structural maps.
